Tagged: Pricing a monthly article

I have no clue if this works on the forum, but I would love to have some of you look at this article (link to my Dropbox copy):
I can’t tell how many hours I spend on these, but it’s a monthly thing that gets me a lot of exposure with movers-and-shakers in town.
It’s our local chamber of commerce’s ‘Small Business of the Month’ article [backed up by a sponsoring bank], and I’m telling you … having them give this to ME is a huge win.
I’m replacing one of THE writers in town (who died in 2018), so it is quite an honor.
The chamber is extremely happy with my work, especially after I took Belinda’s CMC course (!), and I need to know how to price these puppies.
Right now, I’m getting $200 for each one, but I bet they’re ‘worth’ double that. Lots of research, copywriting to get people to read them (:->), interviewing the honoree … and, sometimes, ‘fighting’ them trying to tell me how to do my job. (Whew!)
The problem is: I know these are taking wwaayy too many hours to send that bill, but I have no idea on pricing for something like this.
My contact is willing to raise the rate, and we’ll talk soon. If I can go to him with, “Well, especially with this new copywriting capability that’s been well-received, the norm would be charging $X. I don’t want to price myself out of the project. Where do you think we can go with this>”
He DEFINITELY wants to keep me on the project. He has been the perfect mentor and has my back.
Is this a (USD) $400 document? $300? There are 10 each year (Feb-Nov), and it’s tedious work.
Buuut, as I said, I take wwaayy too long. Can’t calc from hourly.
Please-o-please-o-please give me your feedback!

Just have a quick look at this, the first number that popped into my head was $400.
Now it does depend on how much time you spend on research and interviews etc but I think $400 USD is definitely reasonable.
Once you have a number, you can work out your writing process to create a time map — to make sure you don’t spend an endless amount of time on this. Just a specific number of hours.
That might mean keeping the interview tight. It might mean writing faster. It might mean making sure the client stays focused on the revisions you need.

Thanks much. That is EXACTLY the number I was thinking!
I think when I discuss it with them again and tell them they are getting at least a $400 value per article, they will raise it.
My contact has been very good about helping me with the money part.
I’ll let you know :-), K.
