Leeha Debnam 26 March
Hello! I hope you’re all having a great week.
I’ve just had an enquiry from a lady in Sydney that’s looking for someone to write a business proposal. Essentially, she’s a new business that wants to buy the rights to overseas books, print/publish/ and sell them in Australia. The target audience for the business proposal is the overseas publisher that she wants to buy the rights from.
Does anyone here have experience writing business proposals? Is this something that copywriters do or should I refer her to a ‘business consultant’….or a business enterprise centre for more advice? It’s not my nature to just say I can’t ‘help’…so I want to help her as much as I can 🙂

Elizabeth Bond Gee that’s a hard one. Not so much the business proposal part, but the overseas part with such a specific requirement. I’d be referring her to say the Sydney Writer’s Centre for how to approach this- maybe get some examples from others who have tread this path before? You could offer to do some editing to pimp the marketing aspects after she’s drafted a proposal or do the final proofreading? But I’d ask myself first- does this fit with my biz plan?

Di Challenor Does she want you to write from scratch or just edit and proofread? Sometimes with odd requests like this I say how about you have a bash – hit down what you think should be included and then we’ll pull it together, together! And yeah let her know this isn’t your typical area.

Zoe Hannah This sounds like a tricky one, and more of a workshop for a business consultant or coach than a copywriter.
Is it that she wants help with creating the business plan itself, or just the letter writing part to the publisher? Either way, if this feels like it’s way out of your comfort zone, pass.
Usually I’m all for saying yes then working out how to do the thing later, but this does sound tricky, so it might be safer to say thanks but you can’t help this time.

Leeha Debnam Thanks Ladies – I’ve just spent another 40 mins on the phone with her…and I think that she needs business advice rather than a copywriter at this stage. She’s not done any market research…the publisher is trying to do due diligence on her company which she’s only just started. I’ve referred her to a Business Enterprise Centre….She’ll need a website if she figures it all out and she said that she’s called other people and they’ve been less than helpful…so…good karma may bring her back to me eventually 😉
